…and then some

Society seems to have almost completely forgotten the point of tipping someone for their services.

In the past, when I would get my hair cut, I would tip the girl as much as five dollars.  Why?  Well, that’s a question that people often don’t really think much about when it’s time to tip a waiter, or the pizza delivery guy, or a hair stylist/barber.  Most people just say “it’s just what you do”.  Well, why is it just what you do?  There must be a reason, yes?

Well, there is a reason.  The whole point of tipping someone is that it is a way to express gratitude and appreciation for particularly excellent service.  Why tip the girl that cuts my hair?  I’m already paying her to cut it.  Unless she provides some kind of excellent service, such as perhaps washing my hair for me first and gelling it up for me afterwards (both things that aren’t part of the job but would be very nice and show that she cares), then she doesn’t need a tip.

I ordered pizza today.  It’s going to be delivered.  I noticed there’s an extra $2 charge for delivery.  Normally, I’d give a tip, but after thinking about it, I ask myself “why?”.  Some people would say it is rude not to give a tip.  Well, what makes it rude?  Is it rude that I don’t just start giving away extra money to people who are already getting paid to do a job?  Am I a jerk because I didn’t leave a five dollar bill on the table for the waiter that brought us our food?  I honestly think that the restaurant is the only place where people actually evaluate whether or not someone deserves a tip, and even then, they only really think about it if the service sucked.  If it was fair, expected service, then a tip is almost always left, just out of some kind of natural response to eating at a restaurant.  Honestly, though, did that server go above and beyond their expected duties to provide you with the most entertaining or otherwise pleasant dining experience they could?  Could you see that they put forth extra effort to make sure you were as comfortable as you could possibly be?  …or did they just do their job.  Perhaps they were respectful, polite, and provided good service… but that’s their JOB.  It’s what is already expected of them.  They’re already getting paid for that.  Tipping them is extra for something that goes beyond what is expected.

I don’t know about you, but I would save a lot of money if I didn’t tip everybody that provided a service.  I’m not a jerk at all.  If I see someone has done an outstanding job, then by all means I’ll give them a little extra thanks by means of a nice tip.

I’ve seen situations, primarily in movies or something, where a bellhop or someone who carries your stuff for you will actually stand there patiently and wait to be tipped.  If there job is simply to greet us at the door and see us through, but they decided to go the extra mile and carry our stuff for us because they wanted to be extra helpful, even though it wasn’t their job, then that guy deserves a tip.  Thank you for doing that because you certainly didn’t have to.  However, if they’re just doing their job…

…oh, and if ever anybody is visibly waiting or expecting a tip, and I could tell… they don’t get one.  Arrogant bastards.

I know I repeated and paraphrased myself quite a bit here…  hah…. oh well.  Point made.

  1. I agree! But get this! Whenever I get my nails done or get a pedicure or whatever I always go to the salon in our local Walmart. Ive been to tons of other places in the area and so far.. the salon in Wal-Mart is the best! Anyways, this one day I had gotten a mani and pedi and I tipped the girl $5.00… And do you know what she had the nerve to do next?!?! Ugh I was soooo pissed! I handed her the $5.. and started to walk away.. Then she said (and I forget the other girls name so ill leave it blank) “_____ said that you always tip $10!!!!!!!” OMG! Are you friggin serious?!?! I looked at her and said “uhm.. NO!” and walked out.. But I soooo wanted to go off on her and tell her she should be lucky she even got a fucking tip… I couldnt believe she was annoyed with me and asked for me to double my tip!!! Ugh! I was sooo shocked!
